U.S. bias

[edit]

This article has U.S. bias. Quote from EST:

EST may stand for:

Please add the information about the two other time zones. I just don't have the time atm, might do it later. —kooo 13:17, Jan 21, 2005 (UTC)

The great thing about Wikipedia is that anyone may edit it. It may be that only North Americans have edited this article (The eastern time zone extends into Canada also). Please feel free to add this other information.
[jon] 20:39, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I've moved the page to North American Eastern Standard Time Zone. This should solve the problem. Jimp 08:05, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The article still has a U.S. bias. It does not elaborate on which parts of Ontario and Quebec that Eastern Time is used in, and how DST is used in the Canadian regions. It also implies that the Canadian regions are not part of the time zone, but merely follows the same time. I myself am not certain about the information that is missing, and would appreciate it if someone will fix the article. Noting that other users have noticed a U.S. bias I will place a tag on the talk page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by UTSRelativity (talkcontribs) 19:47, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In Ontario and Quebec it's not known as EST directly, but as HNE - Heure Normale de l'Est. During observance of daylight saving, HAE - Heure Avancée de l'Est. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.235.159.104 (talkcontribs)
Not true for Ontario anglophones! They just call it Eastern Time Zone (or EST). QuartierLatin1968 El bien mas preciado es la libertad 17:27, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Anglo Ontarians (myself included) do not use French terms. — Nathan (talk) / 23:10, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Double redirects

I corrected several double redirects to this article (perhaps the page had been moved and nobody changed them). Afonso Silva 22:31, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Impact on India

[edit]

Is there a reason this is here, and if so that Impact on $OTHER_COUNTRY isn't? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.74.176.198 (talk) 10:20, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(Assumed there wasn't and removed it) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.74.176.198 (talk) 04:16, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Impact on India is the same as on the rest of the world that does not follow Daylight savings time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.124.173.90 (talk) 17:35, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect?

[edit]

Is there a reason why Eastern Time Zone redirects to Eastern Time Zone (North America)? If no other article is using Eastern Time Zone by itself, why not kill the parenthetical? Leave the disambiguation links at the top, of course... 138.69.160.1 13:52, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No other article can use Eastern Time Zone by itself whilst that redirects here. JIMp talk·cont 15:28, 28 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

NJ major cities

[edit]

There are no New Jersey cities in the major met areas. At least include Newark and Trenton, moreover Jersey City, Princeton, and Camden. Diet 14:58, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Connection to GMT?

[edit]

I have no idea how changing content works except for the occasional spelling mistake, but is there any way I can ask someone more knowledgeable than myself to put in a reference to how EDT is connected to GMT or any other timezone for that matter? Because what I cannot tell from this page is how many hours ahead or behind this zone is from Europe, or at least a hint at what that math might be, and this may be something every American might know but I simply don't. Thanks. 14.00, 16 June 2008 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.123.69.18 (talk) 12:04, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This article is about the time zone with daylight change in North America. For the static time zone, see UTC−05. Esmito (talk) 18:39, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have tried to add one of the other two time zones, but somebody has removed it. I was not aware that Brazil also had an Eastern Time Zone Cityrailsaints (talk) 03:20, 7 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Scope: South America should not be included here

[edit]

This article is about the time zone with daylight change in North America. For the static time zone, see UTC−05. Esmito (talk) 18:40, 27 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Likewise Central America (Panama), or indeed any country which does not have multiple time zones. Which of course, makes a mockery of the reason to exclude disambiguation for Eastern Timezone (Australia), which does have time zones and uses exactly the phrases "eastern time" and "eastern time zone", and therefore should at the least be referenced in a disambiguation leader. Martin Kealey (talk) 11:00, 8 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Usage

[edit]

I think, in Canada at least, people use the expression "EST" instead of ET as a generic name for both EDT and EST (even in the summer). Can somebody confirm this or add this? It could cause confusion if one writes EST with the meaning of ET and somebody else interprets EST to mean EST specifically and not EDT.--67.219.254.84 (talk) 17:47, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Canada?

[edit]

It seems strange that this page is part of WikiProject Canada but not part of WikiProject United States. Should we consider removing the WikiProject Canada tag? Guy Macon (talk) 22:24, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

bolded cities

[edit]

In the part of the article that lists the cities using this zone, there are several cities in bold, but there is no explanation to what the bold means. Does it mean the largest cities, if so, what is the threshold for a city to be in bold? Crd721 (talk) 04:09, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see any reason to leave them bold. JIMp talk·cont 05:17, 21 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Time and DS templates

[edit]

I can understand the quibble about "accurate time", since someone's cache might not be current. But why deleted the daylight savings start/stop info too? --Uncle Ed (talk) 22:24, 22 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree perhaps people don't realise that this is the time the page was generated (maybe a footnote could be helpful there). I noticed, though, that the the date was wrong we had the UTC date not the Nth Am Eastern Time date. I fixed that. There are a couple of other tings which I'd like to "fix". Firstly, why do we have the time in 24-hour format? I'd change it to 12-hour format, which is much more readable & matches the use in the intro. Secondly, the article gives the start & end of DST this year. At the end of the year aren't you more interested in when DST starts next year? At the beginning of the year aren't you more interested in when it ended last year? In other words, during DST we're giving the start and end of this daylight-savings time period why not give the start and end of this period of standard time during standard time? JIMp talk·cont 04:35, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I moved the whole lot into an infobox. I built the {{purge}} template into the infobox so that if someone thinks the time is wrong they might realise that you just need to refresh the clock. JIMp talk·cont 10:46, 25 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Eastern Standard Time (disambiguation) - requested move

[edit]

I've recently discovered that Eastern Standard Time is a redirect to the US Eastern Time Zone article. I tried redirecting it to Eastern Standard Time (disambiguation) but it was reverted,[1] so I've started a move discussion, which may be found at Talk:Eastern Standard Time (disambiguation)#Requested move. Interested parties are invited to discuss. --AussieLegend (talk) 11:53, 11 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

<!-- interwiki link kept as it links to a section --> [[de:Zeitzone#Zonenzeit_UTC.E2.88.925h_bis_UTC.E2.88.924h]]
But it would be better if it was just a link to de:UTC−5 (UTC−5), because the other one is to all "Zeitzonen" (time zones).
In de.wiki, Eastern Standard Time is just #WEITERLEITUNG [[UTC−5]] (REDIRECT) --Schwab7000 (talk) 09:07, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Current time

[edit]

Here is information on the current time;

It's 19:17 (EST) on November 16, 2024

  • Daylight saving time began on March 10
  • Daylight saving time ended on November 3

Would anybody like this in an infobox? --Uncle Ed (talk) 17:01, 20 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The infobox already has beginning and end dates for daylight savings time. Adding the current time, though, might be a good idea. Jimp 08:18, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
... "Adding the current time" ... or, more specifically, reverting its removal, which was done by Zzyzx11 on the basis that it was the "Same principle as WP:CLICKHERE - the refresh link to display current time is useless when this article is in other forms such as print or spoken word". I disagree with this since the information is useful (no, not if printed out but when viewed live it is) and since I don't see it as being the same principle at work here. The idea behind WP:CLICKHERE is to write in such a way as to still make sense if transferred. Sure, if you print out a page with the current time on it, it will very soon get out of date, but to disallow the current time to appear on any page because of this doesn't make sense. It's a useful and relevant piece of information. I'm reverting the change. Jimp 08:53, 25 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As a compromise, I have now encased the "(Refresh the clock)" link in a span class="noprint" element (note that {{Purge}} already has a span class="noprint" element, but what is needed here is another noprint element to also hide the parentheses surrounding the link. Cheers. Zzyzx11 (talk) 05:18, 26 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have now encased all those rows I previously removed back in April with "noprint" elements, so now they should not show up in the printable version. Zzyzx11 (talk) 05:55, 26 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Great WP:TEAMWORK, guys! I had no idea there was a noprint element that can hide volatile info like that. --Uncle Ed (talk) 12:47, 26 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I wish I knew about that back in April when I originally removed those rows here, but it was not until I participated in 'WP:TEAMWORK' working on another article a couple of months later (and totally forgot I could apply it here until now). Cheers. Zzyzx11 (talk) 06:09, 27 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is a perfect solution and I too have just found out about noprint. Thanks. Jimp 09:24, 27 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Removed "most of the US is in ET"

[edit]

I calculated the percentage of the US population which is in the Eastern Time Zone, and came up with 34%, so I removed the text about most of the US being in Eastern time as a reason it is the de facto official time. -- Echoback (talk) 12:50, 7 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Well, about one-third... MaynardClark (talk) 03:50, 7 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If the claim was 'most of the US is in ET' then why are you using population to invalidate that claim? You should be using geography to invalidate that claim. Is 51% of the land mass of the United States of America in ET, or not? I'm not an American, just an interested party wandering through and thought I should query the validity of your refutation. Haiti is often a year by year case

[edit]

Haiti sometimes follows daylight savings, sometimes not. Its kind of random. The day they switch is also up for interpretation. Sometimes their is an announcement on the radio that the government has decided to switch that day. Sometimes that announcement is wrong... So you often have arguments over what time it is for a couple weeks around the switch. But for the most part, people don't really care that much, unless they are in the business world. A company or school will announce what they consider to be the right time and they'll just go with that. Not really appropriate for this page or the page on Haiti, and I have no official source to site other than personal experience. But I'm leaving it here as an FYI. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.76.64.234 (talk) 16:22, 23 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

TO THE PERSON WHO KEEPS REMOVING MY MENTIONS OF AUSTRALIAN EASTERN TIME

[edit]

Please don't. I am an Australian and like all Australians, when we refer to "Eastern Time", it applies specifically to Australian Eastern Time. There are 24 million Australians and the 24 million of us deserve to have our time zone acknowledged as having the same name, thereby requiring the specification of North America — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cityrailsaints (talkcontribs) 03:20, 7 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wrongful information in image?

[edit]

It says in the image that the green bit to the far east of the land is the UTC-4 however the caption outside the image in the main infobox says its the pink one, not the green. Its confusing. Is it wrong? 189.217.60.122 (talk) 08:36, 2 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If I understand what you're asking, the confusion comes from the zones being labeled only with their standard time offsets, omitting their Daylight Savings Time offsets. The infobox does not make this clear. Eric talk 12:11, 2 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

French translation

[edit]

I could find no justification for including a French translation in the lead for this article's title.

  • this is the English language article
  • there is a French language version of this article linked on the left as normal
  • why French, why not also Spanish and German, too? (to accommodate areas that predominantly speak that language).

So I removed it. Feel free to discuss this action below if you feel it necessary. Rklawton (talk) 15:58, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

'EST' abbreviation.

[edit]

Since the 1884 International Meridian Conference the initials 'EST' and 'Eastern Standard Time' were delegated to the east coast of Australia. I'm not sure when the US Eastern Seaboard Time or Eastern Standard Time came into effect, but I doubt it predated 1884. Whilst it might be common, it should be noted that it's an duplicate time zone. Agendabender (talk) 17:24, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Agendabender, the abbreviation for the Australian Eastern Time Zone is "AEST". Steve Lux, Jr. (talk) 20:02, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Eastern Winter Time (EWT) / Eastern Summer Time (EST)

[edit]

On 6 March 2022, Editor Williamwang363 made this edit changing 'Eastern Standard Time' / 'EST' to 'Eastern Winter Time' / 'EWT' and, similarly, 'Eastern Daylight Time' / 'EDT' to 'Eastern Summer Time' / 'EST' without sourcing and without an edit summary. I reverted with the edit summary unsupported edit;.

Editor Williamwang363 reverted without comment and without supplying sources.

And, I reverted that revert with the edit summary unsupported edit is still unsupported;

Editor Williamwang363 reverted yet again but this time left an edit summary: I don't care if I edit war with you, but I disagree with your revert but still no sources to support the edit.

I am not going to revert again per WP:3RR so I will leave it to others to do that.

Florida section edit?

[edit]

The way the Florida section is currently worded makes it sound like only a small portion of the state is on EST, but it's in fact most of the state except for some western sections of the Panhandle. Is there a way this could be re-worded to make that clearer, perhaps more similarly to some of the other states where the majority of the state is in this time zone (e.g. Michigan's)? I don't know if I'm the person to do it, but I think it needs to be clearer. Beggarsbanquet (talk) 18:10, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
